2019 Recap and 2020 Vision

This year marks 10 years since the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) first released CROWNWeb to be used by Medicare-Certified dialysis facilities. CMS initially released Phase I of CROWNWeb in February 2009. At that time, the system was used by only eight facilities. During Phase II, the number of facilities using CROWNWeb increased to 180 facilities in July 2009. By Phase III, the number of facilities using the system doubled to 360 nationwide in May 2011. CROWNWeb was officially released nationally to all facilities in June 2012.

Over the years, CMS has worked closely with various application development teams to implement updates to CROWNWeb and its supporting systems. These updates included mandatory changes to support CMS initiatives as well as user-suggested enhancements.

With system requirements and human-centered design in mind, CMS applied the following new features to its ESRD Quality Reporting System (EQRS) and CROWNWeb applications in 2019:

List describing updates to CROWNWeb: Transient Patient Indicator, Auto Accept for Date of Death, CMS Certification Number (CCN) no longer required on CMS-2746, Updates to CCN State Codes, Pain Assessment Notice, and Social Security and Medicare Claim Numbers Masking

To assist facilities with their data reporting in 2020, CMS has updated EQRS and CROWNWeb to support data reporting for:

  • Medication Reconciliation
  • In-Center Hemodialysis Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (ICH CAHPS)
  • Clinical Depression Screening and Follow-Up
