Kidney Community Emergency Response (KCER)

In preparation for 2019 Hurricane season and other natural disasters, the Outreach, Communication, and Training (OCT) team was pleased to have the Kidney Community Emergency Response (KCER) team participate in the June 2019 Town Hall event. During this informative session the KCER team provided attendees with the who, what, and why of natural disasters. These items outlined tasks in supporting patients, facilities, and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Networks, including:

• Coordinating continuing care and access to the services for dialysis patients during emergencies or disasters
• Providing technical assistance to ESRD Networks, kidney organizations, and other groups
• Ensuing timely and efficient disaster preparedness, response, and recovery for the kidney community
• Incorporating the patient’s voice in all activities, specifically within the emergency community as a whole
• Maintaining active and engaged Emergency Response Groups

OCT assisted KCER by providing attendees with a detailed list (featuring screenshots) of important facility information in the ESRD Quality Reporting System (EQRS) that may be needed by support staff in the event of a disaster. This list of important information included up-to-date facility names, addresses, phone numbers, dialysis types offered, number of stations, and personnel listing. Up-to-date patient information is extremely important, and facilities should keep addresses, phone numbers, and modality current, as these will be among the first items needed when relocating a patient to another facility for treatment.

Emergency Preparedness Checklist

Facilities can assist KCER and the ESRD Networks during a Hurricane or other natural disaster by using the following Emergency Preparedness Checklist to ensure that their patient information is up to date in the EQRS System.

CMS, KCER, and OCT encourage all facilities to view the June 2019 Town Hall recording, and to download the PDF of the slides for use as a reference before, during, and after disasters. These items can be found on the Events Page at www.MyCROWNWeb.org.
